At Atelier Galerie Kempro, paper and drawing have played an essential role for many years. The studio not only works on paper, but also with paper itself. Handmade paper is produced there, and Kempro is increasingly exploring paper as an autonomous material and art form. From this development, Kempro invites visual artist Marjan Leusink for the exhibition Drawing with a Knife.
Originally specializing in drawing, Marjan Leusink exchanged her pencil and charcoal years ago for a knife and other tools with which she removes lines and layers from various surfaces. For this exhibition, she has deliberately limited herself to one material: cardboard.
The cardboard — often coated with layers of diluted ink — undergoes an intensive process of cutting and sanding. By removing material, compositions of curved and straight lines emerge and intersect. The fracture lines range from refined and subtle to rough and layered, revealing the inner layers beneath the surface. In some works, the material is bent and distorted, allowing the flat surface to evolve into a spatial form. Light and shadow play a defining role in this process and enhance the layered quality of the work.
With Drawing with a Knife, Marjan Leusink demonstrates how flexible and expansive the concept of drawing can be. Her working method — based not on building up, but on taking away — connects seamlessly with the investigative approach within Kempro, where material, process, and experimentation are central.
Drawing with a Knife will officially open on Wednesday, May 20 at 2:00 PM and will be on view through Sunday, July 12, 2026. The exhibition is open and accessible to everyone.
