3-Session Sock Knitting Workshop

Would you like to learn how to knit a beautiful, well-fitting pair of socks? Using a basic pattern, you’ll knit your first pair from cuff to toe in 3 classes—plus a few hours at home. Ine Troelstra and Marleen Hoogendam will guide you through the technique.
Who is this for?
For knitters who have knitted in the round before and know the basics: casting on and binding off, knit and purl stitches, and decreasing and increasing.
What will we do?
We’ll use a circular needle—easier for most participants than the traditional “porcupine” setup of four separate sock needles. Already used to straight needles without a knob? Then feel free to bring those along.
In Lesson 1, you’ll cast on the sock and we’ll knit the leg. By the end of the lesson, you’ll be able to try it on—and if the sock fits over your heel, you can breathe a sigh of relief!
In Lesson 2, we’ll knit the heel and help you get started on the foot.
In Lesson 3, we’ll finish the foot and toe, and you’ll learn how to neatly bind off the socks.
Along the way, we’ll look back and ahead: what would you like to do differently in your next sock? Where can you find patterns and suitable yarn? And how do you determine the size—for yourself or for someone else?
What do you need?
We can provide the following for each participant: one skein of 4-ply sock yarn (420 m/100 g) and an 80 cm circular needle, size 2.25 mm—together for €15. With this thin needle and yarn, you’ll make wonderfully warm and durable socks that you can wear right in your shoes.
Do you have a condition (such as osteoarthritis) that makes thin needles difficult to use? Then you can also work with 6-ply yarn on 3 mm needles.
Please specify your order when registering:
- Circular needle: 2.25 mm (for normal and slightly looser knitters) or 2.5 mm (for tight knitters)
- One skein of sock yarn (100 g): yes / no
You don’t need to choose a color yet—we’ll bring plenty of different skeins to the first class. We’ve deliberately chosen colors that aren’t too busy or too dark, so you can clearly see what you’re doing when you knit a sock for the first time.
About the instructors
Ine Troelstra has been knitting for years, and socks are her great passion. Last year, she made it to the fifth round of the international sock-knitting competition “Sock Madness.”
Marleen Hoogendam is an enthusiastic knitter with extensive knowledge of the history of knitting both in the Netherlands and abroad.
